Tandon kicks off new game design lab
November 19, 2025
NYC is establishing and cementing its place as a new hub for digital gaming. An initiative led by the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media Entertainment, the creation of the NYU Game Design Future Lab is part of that push to grow local gaming studios here. In partnership with NYU Tandon and the NYCEDC, six teams are part of a year long business oriented incubator to boost the city’s economy and support a self sustaining games entrepreneurship ecosystem.
The NYU GDFL is well underway, with the teams taking full advantage of the incubator’s support.
In 2021, MOME published an economic impact report that identified an opportunity for NYC’s cultural and creative industries to augment this exciting growing industry. With a rich history and strong network of film and television, music, fashion, and tech leaders residing, working, and succeeding in New York City, NYCEDC sees an exciting opportunity to grow the digital games industry - NYCEDC
The team at Munity Games said it applied for the program because it faced challenges when pitching their debut project, Shootlanzer, due to their operations as a democratically led company. Founded in 2023, it is owned and run by its members who have a vote in all decisions regarding their studio. The team also said having the office space was an advantage since meetings were previously held on Discord and in cafes. - NYUNEWS
“We’re in the process of preparing our pitch for our potential mentors,” Shootlanzer’s project manager, Krystel Theuvenin said. “Being here, we’ve been able to go down into the game center and talk with folks down there about what it takes to make an arcade cabinet. Thankfully, we’ve had some people that kind of give us some ideas”- NYUNEWS
